COURSE CURRICULUM

The Recreation, Tourism, and Management (RTM) program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is a two-year, five-semester diploma designed to develop leaders, innovators, and community-focused professionals in the recreation and tourism sectors. In Year 1, Semester 1, students build a foundation in business and technical writing, Excel, leadership, marketing, research literacy, introduction to recreation and tourism, program planning, and diversity and cultural foundations, establishing both practical and conceptual skills. Semester 2 expands on these skills with environmental sustainability, organizational management, facilities management, personal health and wellness, sports administration, service industry operations, inclusive leisure, and advanced program planning, integrating applied and theoretical knowledge. Year 2, Semester 3, emphasizes applied learning through programming labs, fund development and partnerships, community public relations, microeconomics, event planning, community development, outdoor programming, and community-based tourism, equipping students to manage real-world projects. Semester 4 focuses on law and risk management, outdoor programming labs, career development, applied leadership, economic development, event management, business planning, and group tours and guiding skills, preparing students for supervisory and managerial roles. The program culminates in Semester 5 with a 10-credit practicum, where students gain 195 hours of hands-on experience in diverse community, recreation, tourism, and parks settings. Through this blend of classroom instruction, applied labs, and real-world practice, graduates emerge as confident, skilled, and socially responsible professionals ready to lead, innovate, and make meaningful contributions in the recreation and tourism industry.
