COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the Mechanical Engineering Technology program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic provides a strong foundation in mechanical design, energy systems, and instrumentation, combining theory with practical, hands-on learning. In Semester 1, students are introduced to CAD drafting, fundamental communication skills, drafting principles, engineering analysis, applied mechanics (statics), fluid mechanical energy concepts, mechanical engineering applications, and technology seminars, developing both technical competence and professional awareness. Semester 2 builds on this foundation with CAD modelling and design, basic electricity, strength of materials, fluid transport and energy systems, fabrication, mathematics for engineering technologies, and technical communication, allowing students to integrate design, analysis, and practical problem-solving skills in mechanical and thermal-fluid systems. Semester 3 focuses on more advanced applications, including modelling and design, fluid power, applied fabrication and manufacturing processes, engineering software and data acquisition, and an introduction to Indigenous studies, while maintaining a strong emphasis on experiential learning. Across the year, students develop proficiency in analyzing, designing, and implementing mechanical systems, understanding materials and energy concepts, and applying tools such as CAD and engineering software to real-world challenges. By the end of the first year, graduates gain a comprehensive understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals, preparing them to tackle more complex design, energy, and instrumentation projects in subsequent years while fostering teamwork, problem-solving, and professional skills essential for success in the field.
