COURSE CURRICULUM

The BioScience Technology diploma program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic spans two years and emphasizes hands-on, practical learning to prepare students for careers in biosciences, biomedical research, and applied research. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through courses in vertebrate anatomy and physiology, botany, general and analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, plant physiology, quality assurance, statistics, and laboratory safety, combined with extensive lab work to develop technical proficiency. The second year advances students’ skills with molecular biology, histotechniques, laboratory preparation techniques, analytical instrumentation, plant and animal cell culture, microbiology, immunology, and applied microbiology, alongside continued laboratory practice. Students also enhance their professional and communication skills through courses in scientific communication and computer applications. The program culminates with an eight-week laboratory practicum, providing on-the-ground, supervised experience in a real research or applied laboratory setting. Throughout the program, students learn to follow good laboratory practices, handle and prepare chemicals, use analytical instruments, conduct experiments with plants, animals, and microorganisms, and record, process, and report data accurately. By integrating theory, lab exercises, and practicum experience, graduates emerge with the technical expertise, analytical skills, and professional readiness to excel in diverse laboratory, research, and biotechnology roles, making them highly employable in the biosciences sector.
