COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Technology diploma at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is a 32-month, full-time program that combines five academic semesters with three co-operative education work terms, preparing students for careers in environmental protection and sustainable engineering. In Year 1, Semester 1, students build foundational knowledge in environmental science and technology, environmental sampling and analysis, the living world, mathematics for engineering technologies, surveying, workplace communication, and engineering geology with lab applications. Semester 2 introduces computer-aided drafting, environmental field work, site assessment, environmental monitoring, calculus, soil testing and classification, and technical communication. Following the first year, students complete two consecutive co-op work terms to gain practical, hands-on experience. Year 2, Semester 3, focuses on engineering chemistry, ecosystems, GNSS and GIS fundamentals, groundwater technology, environmental laboratory analysis, physics, and statistics, followed by a third co-op work term. Year 3, Semester 4, advances learning with environmental field work, boreal field work, environmental chemistry, atmospheric environment, site assessment, energy resource management, applied ecology, and hydrology. The final semester emphasizes liquid and solid waste management, remediation and reclamation, environmental management, environmental impact assessment, contaminant hydrogeology, project management, and a capstone project with applied research. Students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills through classroom instruction, labs, fieldwork, and co-op experiences, equipping them to implement engineering solutions, assess environmental risks, and manage projects in government, industry, and consulting roles.
