COURSE CURRICULUM

The Civil Construction option in the Civil Engineering Technologies diploma at Saskatchewan Polytechnic provides students with a comprehensive education in construction-focused engineering principles and practical applications. Building on the foundational skills from the first two semesters, students develop expertise in concrete technology, asphalt construction, hydraulics, and soils, learning to evaluate, design, and manage construction materials and processes. Applied mechanics and mechanics of materials courses provide the technical understanding necessary for analyzing structural integrity, while structural steel, wood, and concrete design courses prepare students to design safe and efficient buildings and infrastructure. Transportation engineering courses emphasize planning, designing, and managing roadways and transportation systems, integrating safety, sustainability, and material performance considerations. Municipal infrastructure and water and wastewater management courses introduce students to public works systems and urban planning requirements. Project management, construction contracts, and applied research skills are integrated throughout the program, ensuring students are prepared to plan, execute, and evaluate projects efficiently. The program also includes cooperative work terms, allowing students to gain hands-on experience and apply classroom knowledge in real-world construction settings. In the capstone project, students synthesize learning from all semesters, demonstrating practical problem-solving, technical design, and leadership abilities. Graduates are prepared for careers in construction engineering, municipal infrastructure management, and project coordination, equipped with both technical expertise and applied experience.
