COURSE CURRICULUM

The Occupational Health and Safety certificate program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic prepares students to become skilled professionals in workplace safety across a variety of industries, including natural resources, manufacturing, healthcare, and office-based businesses. The program emphasizes practical knowledge and professional skills to help employers meet occupational health and safety legislation, standards, and best practices. In the first semester, students focus on core concepts such as incident investigation, ergonomics, professional education and career planning, law and ethics, risk management, and safety program management, totaling 24 credits. The second semester builds on this foundation with courses in fundamentals of industrial hygiene, disability management, organizational behavior, emergency management, and fire prevention and protection, also totaling 24 credits. In the third semester, students enhance their expertise through courses in auditing safety management, contractor safety systems, and cultural diversity, alongside a five-credit practicum that provides hands-on experience in a real-world work environment, totaling 13 credits. Additionally, students select one elective from options such as fatigue management, psychological health and safety, respiratory fit testing train the trainer, transportation of dangerous goods train the trainer, or Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) train the trainer. Overall, this comprehensive program equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to identify hazards, implement safety strategies, and contribute to safer and healthier workplaces in diverse industries.
