COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Laboratory Assistant program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is a 32-week nationally accredited certificate that equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to work effectively in clinical and laboratory settings. Over two semesters, students gain hands-on experience and theoretical understanding in anatomy and physiology, microbiology, histology, cytology, infection control, laboratory safety, and specimen collection and handling. In the first semester, courses focus on foundational skills, including introduction to anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, general laboratory practices, basic laboratory procedures, and professionalism in health care, as well as psychology of health and wellness management, preparing students to interact with patients and health care teams. The second semester emphasizes practical clinical skills through courses in clinical procedures, clinical specimen procurement and management, electrocardiography, practical skills and simulation, interprofessional education, and cultural and Indigenous awareness in health care. Students also study histology and cytology to understand cellular structures and processes. The program blends classroom instruction, laboratory training, and clinical experiences, enabling students to apply their learning in real-world health care environments. Graduates are prepared for employment in hospitals, community clinics, medical offices, research and pharmaceutical laboratories, veterinary clinics, and specialized health care facilities, making it an excellent pathway to a rewarding and in-demand career in health care.
