COURSE CURRICULUM

The Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) certificate program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is a full-time program designed to prepare students for careers in health care, focusing on supporting older adults and individuals with varying physical, cognitive, and psychosocial needs. The program spans 52 credits and combines classroom instruction, hands-on lab learning, and clinical practicums to ensure students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Courses cover essential topics such as Body Systems, Human Growth and Development, Foundations of Sociology, Dementia Care, and Interpersonal Communications, alongside specialized caregiving skills in Personal Care 1 and 2, Special Procedures, Community Care, End of Life Care, and Special Needs 1 and 2. Students also develop critical skills in observing, reporting, and recording client information, helping skills, and personal competence. The program emphasizes applied learning, with Clinical 1 and 2 placements in long-term care facilities, where students work under instructor supervision and alongside experienced Continuing Care Assistants to practice their skills in real-world environments. By integrating theory, hands-on training, and practical experience, the program equips graduates with the knowledge, compassion, and professionalism required to promote independence, provide safe and effective care, manage dementia and other special needs, and work effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds, preparing them for rewarding careers in long-term care, home care, and community health settings.
