COURSE CURRICULUM

The Carpentry certificate program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is a 32-week, two-semester hands-on program offered at the Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, and Saskatoon campuses, designed to equip students with the practical skills and knowledge required for a career in the construction trade. In the first semester, students build foundational expertise through courses such as Construction Documents, Site Layout, Concrete, Tools, Foundations, Floor Framing, Wall Systems, Building Materials, Trade Math, Projects, and Safety Awareness, totaling 32 credits. This semester emphasizes practical application, teaching students to read plans, accurately measure and cut materials, assemble structural components, and follow safety protocols. The second semester further develops technical skills and industry readiness with courses in advanced Construction Documents, Transits, Exterior Finishes and Accessories, Exterior Windows and Doors, Roof Framing, Introduction to Indigenous Studies, Interior Finishes, Wall Cabinets, Building Envelope, Essential Job Skills, Roof Coverings, Scaffolds and Rigging, Wood Stairs, and a Work Placement, totaling 28 credits. Hands-on training and the work placement provide real-world experience, allowing students to apply classroom learning in professional construction settings, build problem-solving and teamwork skills, and establish industry contacts. Graduates leave the program prepared to enter the workforce as skilled carpenters, capable of performing tasks in residential, commercial, and industrial construction environments with confidence, technical competence, and professional readiness.
