COURSE CURRICULUM

Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Welding program equips students with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed for a successful career in welding and fabrication. The program is designed for individuals who enjoy working with their hands, solving problems, and following precise instructions while working independently or in a team. Students learn fundamental communication skills, trade mathematics, and computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel, along with foundational knowledge in metallurgy and heat treatment of metals. The curriculum emphasizes blueprint reading, hand drafting, computer-aided design, and interpretation of welding symbols, ensuring students can accurately plan and execute welding projects. Hands-on training is extensive, covering fabrication equipment, oxy-fuel processes, thermal cutting, and wire feed welding. Students progress through multiple shielded metal arc welding workshops, building proficiency in increasingly complex techniques, and also receive training in gas tungsten arc welding. Quality assurance, welding safety, and Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) welder qualification are integral parts of the program, preparing students for industry standards and certifications. Shop projects allow learners to apply theory in practical scenarios, reinforcing technical skills and problem-solving abilities. By the end of the program, graduates have the competence to operate a variety of welding equipment, perform multiple welding processes safely and efficiently, read and interpret technical drawings, and meet industry quality standards, positioning them for immediate employment in high-demand welding roles across oil and gas, mining, manufacturing, and construction sectors.
