COURSE CURRICULUM

The Machinist certificate program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic provides students with the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to excel in high-demand machining careers across industries such as oil and gas, power utilities, manufacturing, mining, milling, and chemical plants. This one-year, full-time program, offered at the Saskatoon and Regina campuses, emphasizes practical training on a wide range of machine tools, including lathes, mills, drill presses, surface grinders, and CNC lathes and mills, supplemented with CNC basics through blended learning. Students gain skills in precision machining, including benchwork, drilling, grinding, sawing, lathe operations, manual milling, and heat treatment processes. The curriculum also covers technical foundations such as blueprint reading, technical drawing, materials selection, precision measurement, applied mathematics, safe working practices, and fundamental communication skills. Instruction in welding operations, CNC programming, and lathe and milling operations ensures students can meet the precise tolerances required in industrial workplaces. Students also complete an industrial attachment, providing real-world experience and exposure to professional work environments. With guidance from experienced instructors, graduates develop problem-solving skills, technical knowledge, and workplace safety awareness, preparing them for immediate employment as machinists or for progression to apprenticeship programs, and equipping them with the versatility and competence required to succeed in diverse industrial sectors.
