COURSE CURRICULUM

The GIS certificate program consists of two intensive semesters totaling 52 credits and provides a strong foundation in geospatial technologies through practical, project-based learning. In the first semester, students develop essential technical skills through courses such as Introduction to Microsoft Excel, Geographic Information Systems I, Introduction to ArcGIS, Data Input for GIS, Basic Statistics and Geostatistics, and Introduction to Python. They also learn about GIS hardware, GPS fundamentals, mapping and compassing, and complete work preparation to support employability, while Indigenous Studies introduces important cultural context. The second semester builds advanced competency in specialized GIS applications, including vector analysis, raster analysis, three-dimensional analysis, and mobile GIS. Students gain experience with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) data acquisition and processing, explore cartography and web-based GIS, and develop skills in remote sensing through two dedicated courses. Applied research and GIS project management courses integrate the semester’s learning, requiring students to manage real-world style geospatial projects from planning to execution. Together, the curriculum ensures graduates are prepared to analyze spatial data, create digital maps, work with UAV and remote sensing technologies, and apply GIS solutions across diverse sectors such as natural resources, urban planning, environmental management, and emergency response.
