COURSE CURRICULUM

The Educational Assistant certificate program spans three semesters and provides a strong combination of theoretical learning, skill development, and hands-on experience. In the first semester, students study Supporting Instruction I, Child and Adolescent Development, Guiding Behaviour, Professionalism in the Educational Setting, Studies of Exceptionality A, and complete an eight-credit practicum that introduces them to real classroom environments. The second semester builds on these foundations with courses in Supporting Instruction II, Family Dynamics, Culture and Diversity, Interpersonal Communications, Essential Job Skills, Basic Care Skills, Personal Wellness, and Studies of Exceptionality B, helping students develop the ability to support diverse learners while understanding cultural, family, and developmental factors. Practical skills such as effective communication, behavioural guidance, and care techniques are emphasized throughout the coursework. The final semester consists of a second eight-credit practicum, giving students the opportunity to apply what they have learned in both elementary and high school settings, gain confidence, and experience the daily responsibilities of an educational assistant. Altogether, the program prepares graduates to work collaboratively with teachers, support students with varying needs, and contribute positively to inclusive and supportive learning environments.
