COURSE CURRICULUM

The Building Systems Technician certificate at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is a one-year, hands-on program structured over three semesters, designed to prepare students for careers maintaining and operating the complex mechanical and technical systems in commercial and institutional buildings. In the first semester, students build foundational knowledge through courses such as Building Applications 1, Legislation Codes, Heating Systems, Building Systems Maintenance, Power Lab 1, Applied Mathematics, Thermodynamics and Mechanics, Communications for Technicians, and an introduction to Microsoft Word and Excel, totaling 25 credits. The second semester deepens technical expertise with Building Applications 2, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems, Power Lab 2, Project Management, Health and Safety Awareness, Technology Seminars, Consumption, Waste and Energy Management, and Culture and Diversity, also totaling 25 credits, with a strong emphasis on practical and lab-based learning to develop troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. In the third semester, students focus on advanced concepts through Building Automation, Renewable Energy, and a Capstone Project, alongside a Work Experience component that provides real-world exposure and professional networking opportunities. Across all semesters, the curriculum integrates theory, hands-on practice, and professional skill development, ensuring graduates are prepared to work independently or in teams, maintaining and optimizing electrical, HVAC, refrigeration, water treatment, and building automation systems in diverse commercial, institutional, and industrial settings.
