COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Laboratory Technology program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is a nationally accredited, two-and-a-half-year advanced diploma that prepares students for a dynamic career in diagnostic health care. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, general laboratory practices, infection control, professionalism, cultural and Indigenous awareness, and quality management, alongside introductory courses in clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology, histotechnology, and immunology. Hands-on laboratory practice is integrated throughout, with a focus on specimen procurement and management, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings. The second year deepens expertise through advanced courses in clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology, transfusion science, and histotechnology, complemented by interprofessional education, research skills, and practical simulation labs that develop competencies in molecular diagnostics, clinical chemistry, hematology, histotechnology, and transfusion medicine. The program culminates in a third-year clinical practicum, where students gain extensive real-world experience in clinical microbiology, hematology, transfusion science, clinical chemistry, and histotechnology, supported by competency maintenance and applied learning. Graduates emerge with the technical skills, critical thinking abilities, and professional standards necessary to accurately perform laboratory analyses, interpret results, and contribute effectively to patient care, making a tangible impact in health care environments.
