COURSE CURRICULUM

The Health Information Management program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective health data management in healthcare settings. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through courses such as Communications, Computer Essentials, Medical Terminology, Health Information Management 1, and Human Anatomy and Physiology. These courses introduce students to essential concepts in health information science, medical language, and the biological basis of health and disease. In the second term, the curriculum advances with courses in Database Management, Coding 1, Statistics, Health Information Management 2, and continued study of Human Anatomy and Physiology, providing students with critical skills in data organization, medical coding, and statistical analysis. The second year focuses on advanced topics including System Analysis and Design, Introduction to Health Care Delivery, Healthcare Research Methods and Epidemiology, Coding 2, and Pathophysiology, which deepen students’ understanding of healthcare systems, research principles, and complex coding practices. The final term offers specialized courses in Healthcare Information Analytics, Health Information Law, Management Principles, Pharmacology, and Coding 3, alongside a Hospital Practicum that provides real-world experience. This practicum allows students to apply their learned skills in a clinical setting, preparing them for professional roles. Throughout the program, students gain expertise in medical coding, health information systems, and the legal and ethical aspects of managing patient data. Graduates are well-prepared to pursue certification with the Canadian Health Information Management Association and enter a variety of healthcare environments, ensuring accurate and secure management of health information to support patient care, administration, and research.
