COURSE CURRICULUM

The Disability and Community Support diploma program is a two-year curriculum designed to prepare students for roles supporting individuals with disabilities across a variety of life settings. In Year 1, Term 1, students begin with foundational courses including Communication Strategies, Academic Writing, Employment and Disability, Values and Issues in Disability, Supported Community Living, and their first hands-on experience through Practicum 1, totaling 19 credit hours. This term introduces students to key concepts and values in disability support while developing essential communication and writing skills. In Term 2, students deepen their understanding with Essential Communication in Human Service, Exploring Disabilities, Understanding Complex Behaviour, Applied Teaching and Learning, and A Context for Practice With Indigenous Peoples, while continuing their practical experience through Practicum 2, also totaling 19 credit hours. These courses explore teaching strategies, behavioral support, and cultural competence in human services. In Year 2, Term 3, students study more specialized topics such as Augmentative and Alternative Communication, Inclusive Education, Conceptual Frameworks in Disability Services, Applied Literacy, and Advocacy and Disability, alongside Practicum 3, for a total of 17 credit hours. These courses equip students to support communication needs, advocate effectively, and engage in inclusive educational settings. Finally, in Term 4, students complete advanced coursework in Disability and Mental Health, Person Centered Planning, Leadership and Teamwork in Human Services Settings, Sexuality and Relationships, and Community Membership, along with their final field placement in Practicum Final, for 19 credit hours. This final term emphasizes leadership, autonomy, and holistic, person-centered support. Across all terms, the program combines classroom learning with practical experience, allowing students to work closely with experienced professionals in real-world settings. Graduates are well-prepared to support individuals with disabilities in inclusive, respectful, and empowering ways in diverse community and service environments.
