COURSE CURRICULUM

The Power Engineering Technology – 3rd Class program at RRC Polytech provides students with advanced technical knowledge and practical skills required for operating and maintaining large-scale power plants and associated infrastructure. Building on foundational principles, the curriculum emphasizes critical areas such as electrical systems, advanced mathematics, mechanics, thermodynamics, fuels and combustion, instrumentation, and power design, preparing students for real-world challenges in industrial and commercial energy settings. Students engage in extensive hands-on laboratory experiences, including Power Engineering 3F and 3W labs, where they apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios, reinforcing safety protocols, operational procedures, and troubleshooting techniques. Additional courses in plant maintenance, administration, prime movers, pumps and equipment, waste treatment, and refrigeration systems provide comprehensive training in all aspects of power plant operation. Work-integrated learning through co-op-style placements allows students to gain industry experience, develop professional competencies, and establish connections with employers while working under realistic operational conditions. The program equips graduates to handle complex systems safely and efficiently, preparing them to challenge Manitoba’s 3rd Class Power Engineering licensing exam. Upon completion, students emerge as highly skilled technologists capable of managing boiler-based power plants, refrigeration and HVAC systems, and other critical infrastructure, ready to advance their careers in energy generation, industrial operations, and facility management.
