COURSE CURRICULUM

The Disability and Community Support program’s first year provides a comprehensive foundation in communication, human services and practical experience to prepare students for careers supporting people with disabilities. In Term 1, courses such as Communication Strategies and Academic Writing develop essential communication and professional skills, while Employment and Disability, Values and Issues in Disability, and Supported Community Living introduce students to key concepts in disability support, ethics, and inclusive practices. Practicum 1 offers hands-on experience, allowing learners to apply their knowledge in real-world settings under the guidance of experienced professionals. Term 2 builds on this foundation with Essential Communication in Human Service, which enhances interpersonal and professional communication skills, and Exploring Disabilities, which deepens understanding of diverse needs and experiences. Understanding Complex Behaviour and Applied Teaching and Learning equip students with strategies for supporting individuals with varied behavioural and learning needs, while A Context for Practice with Indigenous Peoples provides critical insight into culturally responsive and inclusive practices. Practicum 2 continues to immerse students in applied learning, enabling them to consolidate theoretical knowledge, develop practical competencies and engage directly with individuals in community, educational and care settings. Together, these courses combine academic study and experiential learning to prepare graduates to provide compassionate, effective and professional support to people with disabilities.
