COURSE CURRICULUM

The Power Engineering Technology (4th Class) program provides students with the technical knowledge, practical skills and professional competencies required to safely operate and maintain process equipment in residential, institutional, commercial and industrial settings. In Year 1, Term 1, students develop foundational skills through courses such as Communication Strategies, Thermodynamics, Chemistry, Math and Mechanics, Metallurgy and Safety in Power Engineering, Electricity, Instrumentation and Control, and Steam Generation 1, complemented by hands-on experience in the Power Engineering 4F Lab. Safety training, including WHMIS and General Safety, ensures students understand regulatory and workplace safety requirements. Term 2 builds on this foundation with courses covering Prime Movers, Air Conditioning/HVAC, Boiler Safety, Plant Types and Water Treatment, and Steam Generation 2, alongside practical experience in the Power Engineering 4W Lab and the Work to Learn as a Power Engineer 1 course, providing applied, real-world learning opportunities. Through this combination of theory, lab work and workplace preparation, students gain the expertise needed to monitor, troubleshoot and optimize power plant operations, emphasizing efficiency, reliability and environmental responsibility. Upon completion, graduates receive the Power Engineering Technology 4th Class certificate from RRC Polytech, qualifying them to challenge Manitoba’s 4th Class licensing exam and pursue careers as licensed power engineers in diverse settings, ensuring readiness to meet industry standards and advance professionally.
