COURSE CURRICULUM

The Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic program is a comprehensive, hands-on training course designed to prepare students for careers servicing and repairing heavy-duty equipment, with a focus on diesel-powered systems. In Year 1, Term 1, students build foundational knowledge in key areas such as Communication Strategies, Math, and Shop Safety and Tools, while receiving essential safety certifications through WHMIS and General Safety Training. Technical training includes Wheel Ends, Tires and Brakes, Electrical Foundations, Engine Fundamentals, and Electrical Systems, providing a balanced mix of theoretical and applied learning. Term 2 deepens technical skills with courses in Maintenance, Powertrain Foundations, Suspension, Steering, and Frames, Hydraulic Foundations, Science, and Welding. Students also choose from electives tailored to specific interests such as Service Advisor roles, Advanced Engine Repair, Diesel Engine Overhaul, Engine Management, Torque Converters and Automatic Transmissions, Advanced Hydraulic Systems, Air Brakes, Powersports Performance and Tuning, and Lawn and Garden Equipment. These electives allow students to specialize and gain deeper skills in specific areas of the heavy-duty equipment field. In Term 3, students complete ACCR-9002 accreditation for Level 1 and FIEL-2000 Field Experience, which provides them with real-world practice in a professional setting. Practical training is emphasized throughout the program, with significant time spent in workshops and field placements, simulating actual work environments. The program combines theoretical instruction with extensive hands-on experience, preparing graduates to diagnose, service, and repair complex mechanical and electronic systems in heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. Students leave the program equipped with the skills, certifications, and practical experience needed to begin working as entry-level heavy-duty equipment mechanics in industries such as construction, agriculture, mining, and transportation.
