COURSE CURRICULUM

The Health Care Aide and Health Unit Clerk program is a comprehensive training course designed to equip students with the knowledge and practical experience necessary for supporting patients and healthcare teams. In Year 1, Term 1, students begin with foundational courses such as Communication for Health 1, which focuses on professional communication, and Interpersonal Relationships, emphasizing collaboration and empathy in healthcare settings. Key technical courses include Activities of Daily Living Parts 1 and 2, which train students in assisting clients with essential personal care. Additional subjects like Introduction to Gerontology, Growth and Development, Caring for Clients in the Community, and Long-Term Care provide insight into aging, developmental stages, and community-based care. Students also complete Safety in Health Care Settings and Health Care Delivery to understand safe practices and healthcare systems. A crucial component is the Health Care Aide Clinical Experience, offering hands-on training in real-world settings, supported by Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training to ensure safe and respectful patient interactions. Term 2 shifts focus to administrative and clerical skills essential for a Health Unit Clerk. Courses such as Communication for Health 2 and Computers - Intro build on communication and digital literacy. Specialized training includes Medical Terminology, Order Transcription, and Diagnostic & Therapeutic Orders, which prepare students to process physician instructions accurately. Admission-Transfer-Discharge educates students on managing patient records and transitions efficiently. The program culminates in a Health Unit Clerk Clinical Practice where students apply their classroom knowledge in a clinical environment. Throughout both terms, the HCA and HUC Repository course supports learning with essential resources and tools. The curriculum blends personal care, medical knowledge, administrative skills, and practical experiences, preparing graduates for employment in a range of healthcare settings where they support both patients and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
