COURSE CURRICULUM

Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen’s University requires students to complete the equivalent of at least four graduate-level, one-term courses, along with additional courses recommended by their supervisor to ensure an adequate foundation for their proposed thesis research. Students in the socio-cultural studies stream pursuing an M.A. are required to take KHS 869: Bodies and Social Theory and KHS 873: Critical Methodologies: Politics of Knowledge, while M.Sc. candidates may take only one of these courses. A central component of the program is the master’s thesis (KHS 899: Master’s Thesis Research), which constitutes half of the total program and must be defended orally. All students must complete the Certificate in Human Research Ethics (CORE), as well as Queen’s online Health and Safety Awareness Training and the AODA Training Suite, ensuring ethical and regulatory compliance in research and professional practice. Participation in the SKHS Graduate Seminar Series is also mandatory, providing students with opportunities to engage with ongoing research, exchange ideas, and develop professional and analytical skills. This program structure emphasizes the development of independent research capability, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary knowledge, preparing graduates for careers in academia, research, policy, and applied health and sport settings, as well as fostering the skills needed for ethical, evidence-based, and socially responsible professional practice.
