COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Sc. in Geological Sciences at Queen’s University offers two flexible program options: a two-year Research Method II path with four graduate‑level courses plus a thesis, or a shorter one‑year Path I consisting of either six full‑term courses plus a project (GEOL 898) or eight full‑term coursework credits. In both cases, at least four of the core courses must be selected from the Department of Geological Sciences & Geological Engineering. Every student takes the foundational seminar course GEOL 800, which focuses on research methods, mathematical techniques, and analytical tools in geosciences. Elective courses include advanced topics such as geochemistry of ore deposits (GEOL 839), resource sustainability (GEOL 862), 3D geoscience data visualization (GEOL 864), isotopes and environmental processes (GEOL 866), carbonate facies dynamics (GEOL 883), satellite positioning (GEOL 884), continental-scale geological evolution (GEOL 888), and exploration seismology (GEOL 889). Across either program, students build strong methodological, field, laboratory, and computational skills, and those working on the project or thesis component engage in supervised research culminating in a written report or dissertation.
