COURSE CURRICULUM

Geography at Queen’s University follows Research Pattern I and offers students flexibility in structuring their degree through two distinct options. The first option includes four term-length graduate courses accompanied by a thesis that constitutes half of the total program, allowing students to focus intensively on independent research alongside their coursework. The second option consists of six term-length graduate courses with a thesis that accounts for one-quarter of the program’s weight, providing a broader course-based foundation while still incorporating significant research experience. In addition to these options, all Master’s students are required to complete GPHY 857, the Geography Research Seminar, which supports the development of research design, methodological skills, and critical analysis essential for advanced scholarship. The program is designed to integrate theoretical knowledge with applied research, enabling students to explore key questions in physical geography, human-environment interactions, environmental processes, and pressing issues such as climate change, land-use planning, and sustainability. Through close mentorship from faculty, students gain experience in data collection, spatial analysis, and interpretation, preparing them for careers in academia, government, environmental consulting, or policy development. By combining coursework, seminars, and thesis research, the program equips graduates with the analytical, research, and problem-solving skills needed to address complex environmental and societal challenges.
