COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Sc. program in Chemistry is designed to provide students with advanced knowledge and hands-on research experience, combining independent investigation with structured coursework. Central to the program is a thesis (CHEM-899) based on original research conducted under the guidance of a faculty supervisor, allowing students to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. In addition to the thesis, students complete six module lecture courses, each equivalent to one-half of a term course, totaling the equivalent of three full-term courses beyond the Bachelor’s degree, ensuring a strong foundation in advanced chemical principles. Core program components also include CHEM 801 Safety in the Laboratory, CHEM 802 Chemistry Seminar Program, and CHEM 803 Principles of Scientific Communication, which collectively foster safe laboratory practices, engagement with current research, and proficiency in presenting scientific findings. Unless approved by the supervisor and graduate coordinator, at least four of the six modules, excluding CHEM 801, CHEM 802, and CHEM 803, must be selected from courses offered by the Department of Chemistry to ensure disciplinary depth. Additionally, students are required to complete departmental safety training and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training at the earliest opportunity to maintain a safe and compliant research environment. This structure equips graduates with the expertise, research experience, and professional skills necessary for careers in academia, industry, or further graduate study.
