COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Sc. in Applied Geology at Queen’s University offers students two pathways: the project/course-work Pattern II program or the course-work Pattern III program, each designed to provide advanced geological training and research experience. Under the Pattern II project/course-work option, students complete six primary term-length courses, with a requirement that at least four of these courses be taken within the Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering, ensuring a strong foundation in core geological principles and methods. In addition to these courses, students undertake a project course, GEOL-898, which integrates applied research with practical problem-solving skills. This project allows students to explore a specialized topic in geology under faculty supervision, applying theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios and developing essential research and analytical skills. The project culminates in a written report that demonstrates the student’s ability to synthesize data, conduct independent investigation, and present findings clearly and professionally. Through this structure, the M.Sc. program balances rigorous coursework with hands-on research experience, preparing graduates for careers in geological consulting, resource management, environmental assessment, and academia. The combination of disciplinary depth, applied research training, and practical reporting equips students to tackle complex geological challenges and contribute effectively to the fields of earth sciences and engineering.
