COURSE CURRICULUM

Political and Legal Thought (PLT) at Queen’s University offers an interdisciplinary curriculum drawing from Philosophy, Political Studies, and Law. Students complete six term-length courses in a 12-month MA or LLM program, with MA students required to take at least four designated PLT courses. Courses cover topics such as global justice, jurisprudence, ethics, just war theory, feminism, human rights, and bio-ethics. In addition to course work, students participate in the Colloquium in Legal and Political Philosophy, a seminar featuring leading political and legal theorists, and a biweekly Political Philosophy Reading Group where faculty and students discuss contemporary scholarship. MA students are required to produce a Major Research Paper under the guidance of a faculty supervisor, while LLM students complete a graduate paper, mini-thesis, or full thesis depending on their chosen option. The program emphasizes close interdisciplinary engagement, offering students the opportunity to study complex social, political, and legal questions across multiple perspectives and develop advanced analytical and research skills. This structure allows students to pursue specialized research while benefiting from a collaborative and intellectually rigorous environment that bridges philosophy, political theory, and legal studies, preparing graduates for academic, policy, or professional careers.
