COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Industrial Relations (MIR) program at Queen’s University offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to provide students with a deep understanding of industrial relations, human resources, and workplace dynamics. The core courses cover foundational areas including unions and collective bargaining (MIR 810), labour law (MIR 823 and MIR 824), human resource management (MIR 830), labour economics and industrial relations (MIR 840), organizational behavior (MIR 850), equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace (MIR 853), and analytical methods in industrial relations (MIR 897). Students with prior knowledge in specific areas may, with permission from the Program Director, substitute core courses with advanced or related graduate courses. The program also offers a flexible elective component to allow in-depth study and the pursuit of individual interests, including courses such as human rights law (MIR 825), labour policy (MIR 841), industrial relations in the global economy (MIR 885), negotiations and conflict resolution (MIR 886), and a master’s research paper (MIR 898). In addition, students complete three skills seminars, each worth one credit, focusing on practical competencies such as occupational health and safety, mediation, analytics, performance management, leadership, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. These seminars equip students with essential analytical, research, and interpersonal skills critical for success in human resources, labour relations, and management careers.
