COURSE CURRICULUM

The MASc in Geological Engineering at Queen’s University requires students to complete advanced coursework and a master’s research thesis, GEOL 899. All students take GEOL 800, Geological Research Methods, a seminar-based course covering scientific methodology, mathematical and numerical techniques, and analytical instrumentation in geosciences and geological engineering. In addition, students choose from focused coursework options such as GEOL 804, Focused Topics in Geological Engineering, and GEOL 805, Focused Topics in Applied Geology, each designed around specialized themes under faculty supervision. Other elective courses may include advanced topics like GEOL 839, Geochemistry of Fluids in Ore Deposits, which explores isotope geochemistry, mineral stability, and hydrothermal fluids. Over the course of the program, students conduct original research under the guidance of a supervisor, culminating in a written thesis, GEOL 899, that they defend before a committee. This combination of seminars, domain-specific electives, and independent research ensures that graduates develop a strong foundation in geological science principles, methodological competence, and practical experience in problem-solving, preparing them for roles in consultancy, resource management, environmental engineering, or academia. The program emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and hands-on research experience, equipping students with the skills to tackle complex challenges in geological engineering and related fields.
