COURSE CURRICULUM

Completion of this program requires four graduate term-length courses, a substantial research component, and a thesis. The four courses must meet Graduate Council regulations, meaning they must be full graduate-level offerings or accepted equivalents. In some cases, one senior 400-level undergraduate course may be counted as a graduate course, provided it is approved by the student’s supervisor and does not duplicate material for which the student has already received credit in their bachelor’s program. Beyond coursework, students are expected to conduct meaningful research that aligns with their specialization and contributes to the development of their thesis, demonstrating both independent inquiry and the ability to apply advanced engineering principles. All students enrolled in the research track must also complete CIVL 801, a mandatory non-credit laboratory safety course, at the earliest opportunity following initial registration. Successful completion of this safety training is a formal requirement for graduation and ensures that students are prepared to work safely and responsibly in laboratory and experimental environments. Together, these academic and research requirements provide a comprehensive framework that builds technical knowledge, research capability, and professional readiness, culminating in the submission and defense of an original thesis that represents the student’s mastery of their chosen field.
