COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.) program in Chemistry is structured to provide students with advanced knowledge and research experience through a combination of coursework, seminars, and thesis work. Students complete a research-based thesis (CHEM-899) under the guidance of a faculty supervisor, allowing them to conduct independent investigations and contribute to the advancement of chemical sciences. The program also includes six module lecture courses, each equivalent to one-half of a term course, or the equivalent of three full-term courses beyond the undergraduate degree, ensuring a strong foundation in advanced chemical concepts. In addition, students are required to complete CHEM 801 Safety in the Laboratory to ensure proper laboratory practices, CHEM 802 Chemistry Seminar Program to engage in scholarly discussions and stay current with research developments, and CHEM 803 Principles of Scientific Communication to develop skills in presenting research findings clearly and effectively. At least four of the six modules, excluding CHEM 801, CHEM 802, and CHEM 803, must be chosen from courses offered by the Department of Chemistry unless special permission is granted by the supervisor and graduate coordinator. This combination of independent research, coursework, and professional development equips students with the technical expertise, critical thinking, and communication skills necessary for careers in research, industry, or further graduate study.
