COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen’s University is a thesis-based, two-year graduate program designed to provide advanced research training in the multidisciplinary study of human movement, health, and sport. The program attracts students from diverse academic and professional backgrounds, allowing for a wide range of research topics across areas such as Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Physical Activity Epidemiology, Health Promotion, Psychology of Sport, and Socio-Cultural Studies of Sport, Health, and the Body. Students work closely with a faculty supervisor to design and conduct original research, culminating in a master’s thesis that must be defended orally. Degree requirements include the equivalent of four graduate-level, one-term courses, with students in the Sociocultural Studies stream required to take at least one of the following courses: KHS 869: Bodies and Social Theory, KHS 873: Critical Methodologies, KHS 877: Intersectionality and Knowledge Translation, or KHS 892: Special Topics in Sociocultural Studies. Additionally, students are expected to attend at least 80% of the SKHS Graduate Seminar Series each year, fostering engagement with ongoing research and professional development. Completion of the Certificate in Human Research Ethics (CORE) is also mandatory, ensuring that graduates are equipped with the ethical knowledge required for conducting responsible and impactful research in health, sport, and kinesiology contexts.
