COURSE CURRICULUM

The research-based stream of the Global Development Studies graduate program follows the traditional model of graduate training, combining advanced coursework with extensive independent research. Students are required to complete six half courses, totaling 18 units, which must include DEVS 801, DEVS 802, DEVS 803, and DEVS 850, providing a strong foundation in critical theories, research methods, and interdisciplinary approaches to global development. In addition to coursework, students undertake a substantial research project culminating in the submission of a written thesis (DEVS 899) ranging from 75 to 100 pages. This thesis demonstrates the student’s ability to conduct original research, critically analyze complex issues, and contribute new insights to the field of global development. While the research often involves primary fieldwork, it can also draw on secondary data, archival sources, or other methodologies depending on the student’s research focus. Faculty supervision and mentorship guide students through the process of defining research questions, designing methodology, collecting and analyzing data, and presenting findings in a coherent, scholarly manner. This stream equips graduates with advanced research, analytical, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in academia, development agencies, public policy, social enterprise, and other professional fields, as well as providing a strong foundation for those pursuing further graduate study such as doctoral research in Global Development Studies.
