COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s program in Economics at Queen’s University is designed to be completed over three terms of full-time study, with students typically enrolling in at least three half-courses per term in the Fall and Winter sessions. The program offers three distinct patterns to accommodate different academic and research goals. Program Pattern I requires six half-courses along with a Master’s Thesis, with core courses in microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, and quantitative methods, plus three additional graduate courses in economics, and an average grade of 70% in coursework is required. Program Pattern II combines seven half-courses with a Master’s Essay, again including core courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and quantitative methods, alongside four additional graduate courses, and students must maintain an average grade of 70%. The Master’s Essay is assessed by a committee of the supervisor and another faculty member, with the Graduate Coordinator intervening if grades differ significantly, and students may revise and resubmit a failing essay once. Program Pattern III is entirely coursework-based, requiring eight half-courses, including an advanced sequence in micro- and macroeconomic theory, a core quantitative methods course, and four additional graduate half-courses. This structure ensures a comprehensive foundation in both theoretical and applied economics while allowing flexibility for independent research or a fully coursework-focused approach.
