COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s program in Art History offers two research options for graduate students. Option A, the thesis pattern, allows students to pursue an in-depth Master’s thesis under the supervision of a chosen faculty member. Students submit a thesis proposal for approval by the Art History Graduate Committee before beginning their research and register in ARTH 899. The thesis must follow the electronic publication guidelines provided by the School of Graduate Studies, and upon completion, it is reviewed by a committee selected in consultation with the supervisor and Graduate Coordinator. Following any required revisions, the thesis is submitted electronically for binding, enabling the student to graduate at the next convocation. Option B, the major research paper pattern, involves selecting a topic and supervisor, submitting a research paper proposal for committee approval, and completing the paper for review by two appointed readers. Once revisions are completed, the paper is submitted for binding and graduation. The typical schedule for Option A spans 18 to 24 months, with four half courses in the first year, thesis proposal submission by the end of the Winter term, summer research, and thesis completion and defense in the second year. Option B generally takes 16 to 18 months, with four half courses in the first year, research over the summer, two half courses in the second year, and submission of the Major Research Paper by the end of the Winter term.
