COURSE CURRICULUM

The Pattern II program in Art Conservation is a comprehensive two-year course of study designed to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the conservation of cultural heritage objects. The program includes four terms of on-campus study, featuring advanced lecture courses, laboratory work, and a research project that allows students to apply scientific methods and analytical techniques to the study and preservation of artworks and artifacts. In addition to on-campus training, students complete two twelve-week off-campus summer internships, gaining hands-on experience in professional conservation settings and exposure to real-world challenges in museums, galleries, or cultural institutions. Students in the program must choose a specialization in one of three areas: conservation of paper objects, conservation of artifacts, or conservation of paintings. This focus allows students to develop deep expertise in their chosen field while also acquiring transferable skills in analytical assessment, preventive conservation, and ethical decision-making. By integrating rigorous academic study with practical, immersive experiences, the Pattern II program prepares graduates to become skilled conservators capable of preserving and maintaining cultural heritage for future generations. Students leave the program with the technical, research, and professional competencies needed to advance the field of art conservation at a national and international level.
