COURSE CURRICULUM

The Screen Cultures and Curatorial Studies (SCCS) graduate program offers a comprehensive and multidisciplinary curriculum designed to integrate film and media studies with curatorial practice. Core courses include SCCS 810 and 910, focusing on professional development with workshops in grant writing, presentation skills, research ethics, and curriculum design, along with engagement with guest speakers. SCCS 812/912 and SCCS 814/914 provide critical, theoretical, historical, and methodological foundations in screen cultures and curatorial studies, emphasizing writing, research design, and methodological planning for MA or PhD projects. SCCS 821 is a 1.0 credit unit micro-course associated with the Summer Institute, offering specialized, short-term training. Elective courses, including SCCS 815/915, 818/918, 820/920, 828/928, 830/930, and 840/940, allow students to focus on topics such as historiography, research-creation, media production, critical curatorial studies, Indigenous and diasporic media, and directed readings or projects. Practical and professional experience is supported through SCCS 900 practicum placements with institutions like the Agnes Etherington Arts Centre or the Kingston Canadian Film Festival, while thesis or project work is completed in SCCS 899 (MA) or 999 (PhD). Courses vary in credit units, with 6.0 for core professional development and thesis courses, 3.0 for most electives and core courses, and 1.0 for the Summer Institute, providing a flexible yet structured path for graduate students to develop theoretical knowledge, research skills, and practical expertise in screen cultures and curatorial practice.
