COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.A. Pattern II program in the Department of History at Queen’s University requires all incoming full-time students to complete six term-length graduate courses, or the equivalent, during their first year of study, in addition to a Master’s Essay, also referred to as the Master’s cognate essay (HIST-898). This program emphasizes advanced coursework and the development of research skills through a structured curriculum that includes a mandatory workshop-based research methods and professionalization course, taken in the winter term, which prepares students for rigorous academic inquiry and professional development. The Master’s cognate essay allows students to conduct independent research under the guidance of a faculty supervisor, focusing on a specific historical topic of scholarly interest. Unlike the traditional thesis, the essay is not subject to an oral defense, but it is reviewed and approved by the essay supervisor as well as one additional department member, ensuring both quality and rigor. This structure provides students with the opportunity to deepen their expertise in history while developing the analytical, writing, and critical thinking skills necessary for both academic and professional careers. The program balances intensive coursework with a substantial research component, equipping graduates with the knowledge and skills to pursue further studies, including doctoral programs, or careers in education, media, government, and other fields where historical research and analytical skills are essential.
