COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics and Astronomy program at Queen’s University offers a comprehensive curriculum that begins with a common first-year foundation across Arts, Science, and Computing, allowing students to explore their interests and receive guidance from faculty and advisors. In the second and third years, students delve into classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, relativity, and advanced laboratory work. The program emphasizes mathematical proficiency, analytical and computational skills, and practical laboratory experience, preparing students to design experiments, develop research proposals, analyze data, and communicate scientific findings effectively. In the fourth year, students can take specialized courses in contemporary areas such as nanoscience, medical physics, lasers, nuclear and particle physics, solid-state physics, and general relativity, providing opportunities for interdisciplinary research and collaboration with international projects, including experiments at SNOLAB. Degree options include Bachelor of Science (Honours) with a major, minor, or specialization in Physics, Astrophysics, or Mathematical Physics, as well as a general BSc, BA, and combined BScH/MSc programs, with an optional internship component.
