COURSE CURRICULUM

Chemistry (Science) at Queen’s University is a comprehensive four-year program designed to provide an in-depth education in chemistry while allowing for exploration of complementary subjects. Comprising 72.0 core and supporting units in chemistry along with 48.0 elective units, this 120.0-unit program offers rigorous training in chemical principles, laboratory techniques, and research methodologies. Accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry, the program ensures students acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, with a strong emphasis on hands-on learning through research projects in the fourth year. Students begin with foundational courses in chemistry, physics, and mathematics in the first year, progressing to advanced chemistry courses in the second and third years that cover physical, inorganic, and organic chemistry, as well as specialized electives. The fourth year offers opportunities to tailor the program to specific chemical sub-disciplines, with a mandatory research project providing critical laboratory and investigative skills, and at least 3.0 additional units at the 400-level recommended for those considering graduate studies. Enrollment is limited to 45 students per year from Years 2 through 4, ensuring a focused learning environment. Graduates are well-prepared for employment in industry, government laboratories, or for further graduate work in chemistry.
