COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology at Queen’s University is a 120.0-unit, four-year program that provides a comprehensive foundation in the major subdisciplines of biology while offering flexibility for specialization in the upper years. The program begins with core courses in molecular and cell biology (BIOL 102), organisms to ecosystems (BIOL 103), diversity of life (BIOL 200), Mendelian and molecular genetics (BIOL 205), evolutionary genetics (BIOL 206), and scientific methods in biology (BIOL 212), providing a strong grounding in fundamental biological principles. Students also complete courses in ecology (BIOL 300), cell biology (BIOL 330), and select courses in comparative biochemistry, animal physiology, or plant physiology (BIOL 334, 339, 341), along with statistics (BIOL 243 or STAT 269) to support quantitative analysis. Supporting courses include general chemistry (CHEM 109 & 110 or CHEM 112) and calculus (MATH 120, 121, or 123 & 124). Upper-year students may choose a research or seminar option, completing advanced-level courses in biology and conducting independent research (BIOL 537) or participating in seminars to deepen expertise. The remaining units are filled with electives, allowing exploration of related fields or interdisciplinary interests. The program combines rigorous coursework with research and practical experiences, equipping graduates with analytical, experimental, and critical thinking skills for careers in research, healthcare, biotechnology, environmental management, or advanced studies in biology and life sciences.
