COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biochemistry Bachelor of Science (Honours) program at Queen’s University is a 120.0-unit, four-year degree that provides comprehensive training in the molecular and chemical processes underlying life. The program begins with foundational courses in chemistry, including General Chemistry I and II (CHEM 109 & 110 or CHEM 112), biology (BIOL 102 and 103), introductory biochemistry (BCHM 102) or human disease (PATH 120), and computing with data analytics (CISC 151). Students also complete courses in molecular biology (BCHM 218), organic and physical chemistry (CHEM 211, 212, 222, 223), and statistics (BIOL 243 or STAM 200), as well as mathematics for the life sciences (MATH 130) and introductory physics (PHYS 115). In upper years, the curriculum advances to core biochemistry topics such as molecular biochemistry, proteins and enzymes, metabolism, and extensive laboratory training through courses like BCHM 318, 319, 421, and 422. Additional advanced courses include protein structure and function (BCHM 410), advanced molecular biology (BCHM 411), cellular function (BCHM 432), and seminars in biochemistry (BCHM 442). Students can also choose from specialized option courses to tailor their studies. The remaining units are filled with electives, allowing exploration of related disciplines. The program equips graduates with theoretical knowledge, practical laboratory experience, and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in research, biotechnology, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and advanced studies in biochemistry and related fields.
