COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program offers a structured progression from foundational to advanced studio practice, requiring 90 units for completion. Foundational courses, such as ARTF 100, 101, 102, and 106, introduce students to drawing, painting, sculpture, and other media, though some are restricted from BFA credit. Core BFA courses begin with ARTF 127 and 128, covering two selected media from painting, drawing, 2D, or 3D fundamentals, incorporating technical skills and safety training. Intermediate courses, ARTF 227 and 228, build on these concepts with expanded techniques, studio practice, and optional field trips. Students may also explore digital media (ARTF 275) or printmaking (ARTF 125, 265) to develop conceptual, technical, and critical skills. Advanced courses, ARTF 337 and 338, focus on specialized media with professional practice seminars. In the fourth year, ARTF 447 and 448 guide individualized programs of creative exploration under tutorial and seminar instruction. Exceptionally qualified students may undertake independent study (ARTF 594, 595) with departmental approval. Across the curriculum, students refine artistic skills, conceptual development, historical knowledge, professional practices, and critical engagement with contemporary art, preparing them for a career as professional artists.
