COURSE CURRICULUM

The Indigenous Teacher Education program at Queen’s University is designed to provide a comprehensive foundation for aspiring teachers, combining curriculum, professional studies, practicum experiences, foundational studies, program focus, and educational studies to total 63 units. In the curriculum component, students complete courses in Language and Literacy, Elementary Mathematics, Literacy, Social Studies, Numeracy, Science and Technology, Art, Dance, Drama, Music, and Health and Physical Education, ensuring broad pedagogical knowledge across subjects. Professional studies courses, including Self as Teacher, School and Classroom Leadership, School Law and Policy, Self as Learner, Self as Professional, Professional Knowledge and Practice, Supporting Learning Skills, Building a Professional Career, Introduction to Indigenous Studies for Teachers, Integrating Environmental Education, Educational Technology, and Meeting the Needs of Learners, develop both professional competencies and leadership skills. Practicum courses provide hands-on teaching experience in multiple placements, including standard and alternative settings, reinforcing classroom theory with practical application. Foundational studies in psychological, historical, and assessment principles further support teacher development. Program focus and educational studies courses, such as Indigenous Teacher Education and Theory of Indigenous Education, deepen understanding of culturally responsive teaching practices and Indigenous pedagogies. Together, this program equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and professional experience necessary to teach effectively in diverse classroom environments and to support the learning and well-being of all students.
