COURSE CURRICULUM

The Linguistics Plan at Queen’s University, when combined with a Major or Minor in another subject and with sufficient electives to a minimum of 120 units, leads to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree, offering students a comprehensive foundation in the scientific study of language while allowing flexibility to tailor their education. Students begin with core courses in introductory linguistics, covering the structure, sounds, and meaning of language, and may choose between LING 100 or LING 101 and LING 102. The program develops specialized knowledge through courses in Canadian English, language and power, semiotics, phonology, syntax, phonetics, morphology, and semantics, equipping students with analytical and theoretical skills. Options allow for advanced study in linguistics at the 400-level, while courses in language study enable exploration of multiple languages and cultures. Additional courses in linguistic diversity, identity, and philology broaden students’ understanding of language in social and historical contexts. Electives totaling 72 units provide further flexibility to integrate complementary disciplines, supporting interdisciplinary engagement. This program prepares students for careers in research, education, communication, translation, policy, and other fields requiring strong analytical, linguistic, and critical thinking skills, while fostering an understanding of the role of language in society, culture, and human interaction.
