COURSE CURRICULUM

The Indigenous Studies program at Queen’s University provides students with an in-depth understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, languages, and worldviews, leading to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree when completed with a Major or Minor and sufficient electives totaling 120 units. The core component of the program begins with foundational courses such as Introduction to Indigenous Studies or Indigenous Knowledges and Perspectives, followed by Indigenous Studies II: Resistance and Resurgence. Students then engage in language and culture courses, including Anishinaabe, Inuktitut, or Mohawk at beginning and intermediate levels, enabling them to connect language learning with cultural understanding. Advanced courses, such as Indigenous Theories and Methodologies: Learning through Indigenous Worldviews and Learning from the Land, deepen students’ knowledge of Indigenous knowledge systems, research approaches, and community engagement. The program culminates in the In Community Capstone: Research and Relationships, a six-unit course that emphasizes applied learning, collaboration, and respectful engagement with Indigenous communities. In addition to the core, students complete option courses at the 200- and 300-levels, allowing them to specialize further in areas of interest within Indigenous Studies. With 72 units of electives and other plan requirements, the program ensures flexibility, interdisciplinary exploration, and preparation for careers or further study focused on Indigenous affairs, social justice, policy, education, and community leadership.
