COURSE CURRICULUM

The History program at Queen’s University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive and flexible pathway to earning a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree while fostering deep critical thinking, research, and analytical skills. The program requires completion of a total of 120 units, structured around core, option, and elective courses. In the core component, students begin with foundational 100-level History courses to build essential knowledge and skills, then advance to 300–330 level courses to develop specialized historical expertise, and further explore upper-level courses from 333–499 to engage deeply in specific historical fields and themes. The option component allows students to tailor their program through 200-level courses, advanced 500-level courses, and selected HIST courses from a range of levels, providing opportunities for focused study in areas of personal or professional interest. Additionally, the program includes electives and other plan requirements totaling 60 units, allowing students to broaden their academic experience and complement their historical studies with interdisciplinary perspectives. This structure ensures a balance between depth and breadth of learning, preparing students not only to understand and interpret historical events and processes, but also to develop transferable skills in research, critical thinking, and communication that are valuable across a wide range of careers in education, law, public policy, media, and beyond.
