COURSE CURRICULUM

The Global Development Studies (DEVS) Honours Plan provides students with a broad and interdisciplinary foundation for understanding development challenges in local, national, and global contexts. The program begins with core courses, including DEVS 101 and DEVS 102, which introduce global development perspectives and Canada’s role in international systems. Students also engage with Indigenous knowledge and perspectives through DEVS 220 or INDG 101, followed by courses such as DEVS 230 on global political economy and DEVS 240 on decolonizing development. Research and theory are central to the curriculum, with DEVS 300 and DEVS 340 offering essential methodological and theoretical training. A defining feature of the plan is its experiential component, the DEVS 410 Work Study Placement, where students gain hands-on experience with development organizations, supported by a post-placement seminar and upper-year topics courses. Students customize their degree by selecting additional DEVS electives at the 200-, 300-, and 400-levels, allowing them to explore areas like policy advocacy, environment, migration, human rights, and social justice. With 120.00 units in total, the program equips graduates with strong analytical tools, cultural awareness, and practical experience, preparing them for careers in international development, public policy, NGOs, research, and community engagement.
