COURSE CURRICULUM

The French Studies program at Queen’s University offers an Honors Bachelor of Arts degree when combined with a major or minor in another subject and sufficient electives to total 120 units. The program provides a comprehensive pathway for developing advanced proficiency in French language, literature, and culture. Students begin by completing intermediate-level courses such as FREN 150, FREN 151, and FREN 152, followed by communication, culture, and writing courses including FREN 219, FREN 230, and FREN 231. Advanced studies include FREN 320 and FREN 360, which focus on higher-level communication and grammar skills. Students also explore cultural and literary histories through courses such as FREN 341 on the Ancien Régime, FREN 342 on modern and contemporary France, and FREN 343 on the Francophonie and Quebec. The program culminates with FREN 498, a seminar on literature and social issues, allowing students to critically engage with complex topics. Additionally, students complete 18 units of elective courses from a range of French Studies options, alongside other plan requirements, providing flexibility to tailor their education according to personal interests. Through this combination of language mastery, cultural exploration, and elective choice, graduates acquire strong analytical, communication, and intercultural skills, preparing them for careers in education, translation, international relations, global business, and other fields requiring advanced French expertise.
